I’m going to be completely honest about this – I thought I would be someone by the time I hit 30. I know everyone thinks that they are going to be rich in the future (and often put ‘by 30’ as a goal) but I really thought I would both do that and manage to become someone that other people looked up towards and wanted to be like. To tell the truth, through my 20s I was just distracted by one thing after the next, so I could never be established as anything in particular.
I went to a good school where a lot of people from my year group managed to go on to do some pretty impressive things. I’ve got people that went on to play for football teams, own businesses, become TV presenters and various other things. I avoid Facebook at all costs, but I see other people’s achievements on Instagram, and they definitely irritate me.
I’ve got a lot better at dealing with it in more recent times because I’ve come to accept that lots of people are in fields that I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever, but there I can’t help but feel a little jealous that I can’t brag about the kinds of things that they can. The things is that I never wanted to have any particular career, so that’s out of the question, but I do wish that my business was something a bit more public and worth boasting about.
What I can be happy about however are my home accomplishments. I’ve had a steady relationship for over 10 years, I’m the parent to two great kids and my life is really going quite well for me. When I finally manage to own the home where I sleep, I’ll feel a lot better about myself, but I need to come to terms with the fact that everyone is on a completely different path and I can’t really judge off what I see on other people’s Instagram feeds.
I know I should probably just get over it, but I’ve still got aspirations to be known for something but I think a YouTube channel is my only hope at doing it. I will be someone one day. I’m moving the deadline to 35.
