It’s so funny what age does to your body. When I was younger, I truly thought that I was invincible. I thought that no matter what I ate, there was no possible way that I would put on any weight. I was stick thin in my early 20s and I knew that the only way to solve it was to eat more, but no matter what I did, I just couldn’t manage to make it stay on. I used to snack on ridiculous amounts of crisps, sweets and chocolate between meals and it honestly didn’t make much of an impact on the scales or my physique.
So I continued that way for years and years. Although I sort of parked the goal of trying to get bigger, I just thought that I was made this way and that no matter how I ate, it wouldn’t make much of a difference whatsoever. I had been like this the whole of my life and nothing was clearly going to make any difference to it.
That was all true until my late 20s came around. I was completely blindsided by the reality that your metabolism definitely does change as you age and that there’s no way of escaping it. Through my 20s I gradually built up a series of different eating habits and the were clearly coming to bite me back as I got older.
I started doing things like eating four big meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper). Then I started adding in shakes between those. Then I was having snacks between those too. Even though it didn’t feel like it at the time, I was making it so that so much of my day was based around what I was eating, when I was eating and how much of it I was eating. It wasn’t a big deal to me (mainly because I didn’t see any difference) but my body was clearly just taking notes.
In the lead up to 30 I felt it but it’s definitely true now that my body has really changed. While I could easily have been considered skinny up to about 25 (with no debates) at 30 I fit into the stocky category and I’m not sure if I particularly like it. I mentioned before that I want to start exercising more and I’ll definitely get stricter with it soon, but I know that the main thing that I need to do is cut back on what I eat.
- Cut back my snacks
- Replace my breakfast with a shake
- Stop the supper meal
- Eat healthier
I think that’s the order I need to do things and I’m going to try to stick to it. I feel like the first part is easiest and that it gets harder as I go down the list. Really the hardest is actually deciding to eat better food, because it’s just not something I’ve ever really done. I’m a picky eater and it holds me back in a lot of ways, so let’s see how the other ones go before I have to resort to the most extreme measure.
