I’m the parent of two toddler boys and I couldn’t be happier. I feel like I’ve skipped over what it’s actually like to have kids. Beyond all of the tiredness and not having much time to myself now, raising kids is actually the best.
It’s so much fun seeing them develop and it’s actually such a job that we managed to get their births so close together, as it means that it’s so much easier to manage the both of them. We know that for the next few years they’re going to be into the same things, will be able to share the same toys and we will get along with one another.
Thus far the biggest challenge has been to stop them from battling one another. For whatever reason, our eldest can’t stand it when the younger one has one of his toys. I mean the little one is only one, so he knows nothing other than to grab whatever looks fun, but we feel like we’re being to harsh on our eldest for constantly telling him to leave his little brother alone.
Going out is not easy. I will say that. We have to be out as much as possible since the in-laws are always home and don’t know when to stop interfering, but it’s always such a hassle when we head out and have to manage with the many challenges that come with a day out. There’s the struggle over what food the youngest can eat, whether both of them will stay in their seats, and just keeping things calm.
Thus far I feel as though we are doing as best we can with the situation. Obviously we’re not getting nearly as much work done as we would want to, but the fact that we’re enjoying this – probably the most challenging years with these two is enough to keep us happy. We know that as long as we look at the big picture, we’re going to be able to get to where we’re heading to, and we can continue to enjoy having these little ones.
We hope that things will be a bit better when the youngest turns 2, as our eldest will be 3, and they should learn to play together a lot more, and we won’t have to be around so much to police their behaviour. Until then, we’ll just have to see what the pair of them throw at us.
