So many changes as a result of the first lockdown in March last year and one big positive for my bank balance concerns my hair. £12 every 2 weeks doesn’t sound like a lot but it adds up. Add on my son’s hair and it’s definitely cutting into my budget. When the lockdown came I actually freaked out about my hair. I proper needed it to be cut and I didn’t know if I could just wait until after it ended – especially because we didn’t know when It was going to end at the time.

In the end I bit the bullet and bought some clippers. It took me an hour to cut my hair the first time. It was so scary. My head was red raw after, but I did it. And now it’s a quick 20 minute job. I really look forward to doing it. I feel so fresh after I do it and I can cut my hair whenever I feel like for free.

My son doesn’t enjoy it though and that’s a real problem. Although he ended up being alright at the barber’s (after like a year) it’s properly disintegrated since I’ve been cutting his hair. He hates it. Every time it’s a mess with lots of tears, lots of stops and starts and lots of drama. I’m sure that it’s something I’m doing wrong, but I can’t seem to make it any better for him.

Because of that, I just have to take him back to the barber now. I feel like there’s no alternative. I tried giving him more control over things. I tried with more kid-friendly clippers. I tried incentives. Nothing worked. The next time his hair is cut, it will be by a real barber. But it’s literally a year since the last time I went there and I’m actually feeling so anxious about going back.

I don’t like the idea of going there and having to explain why I’m not getting my hair cut. I don’t like the idea of having to explain why I didn’t come in July when the first lockdown was over. I don’t like the idea of the barber checking my hair and commenting on how bad it probably looks from behind. I’m just really not looking forward to any of it. Just saying.
