I get how bad it is and how why I shouldn’t even admit to this, but I’m all about honesty here and I have to get this off my chest. I used to steal from my last workplace every single day in was in. 5 days a week.
I’ll give you a backstory of it all. Back when I worked at an agency our office was in a WeWork. If you know anything about WeWork, you will know that it’s a really fun environment to be in when you’re working. Our favourite bit was the table tennis table in one of the meeting rooms.
What set it apart from the previous office we were in was that our company was no longer responsible to paying for all of the amenities and extras – it was all covered in the rent.
After a while a lightbulb went off in my head and I realised that there was a certain something that I could get from there, so I wouldn’t need to pay for it at home. That ‘something’ was toilet paper.
I always brought a backpack to work, so all I needed to do was to put one in my bag each day and that would be one less that we needed at home.
We worked on the 6th floor. Every morning I would head to floor 7, go to the toilets, head to a cubicle, grab a toilet roll, and then go down to the 6th floor and start my day. I figured that if they did get suspicious, at least they would think it was a floor 7 problem.
After a few weeks, it evolved. I realised that no one was going to notice. I went from just the one on floor 7 at the start of the day, to one of those and a roll from floor 5 too.
Then I started taking two from each, and one from floor 6 too. It went from just supplementing our home supply to having piles of excess toilet rolls stored in our flat. It’s a shame that it had to come to an end.
When I moved to my most recent job, I just picked up where I left off. I would start the day by heading up the stairs and choosing a random floor to take one a couple of rolls from, then one at lunch, and a couple more at the end of the day.
We didn’t spend a penny on toilet roll the whole time I was working there. We didn’t need to. We had so much more than enough.
That last place had even more helpful things for me to take too. I could help myself to envelopes, pens, tape, and pretty much anything that I could make good use of at home.
Believe me when I say it’s the only thing I miss about working in a corporate office.
