It happened. I’m so damn lucky. I got a job, but it’s only because of a very coincidental situation. After going to a number of job interviews at all kinds of places (including this insurance company, a jobs board and an event promoter, I ended up spotting a job listing to work at a retailer’s head office. It just so happened that my would-be manager was also managing one of my last bosses!
After he quit the agency, he just decided to get himself a regular job. It was a good position, but a real step down from what he was doing before. Anyway, I was still on good terms with him, and he told me he would do his best to get me the job.
On the day I went in, him and my would-be manager were the ones running through my CV for my interview. I really didn’t have to do anything. They were going to sort me out. After that and a follow-up, I’m actually in.
A surprise three months with no salary income is a real nightmare, but I’ve managed to survive it, and now I feel like nothing can stop me. I feel like a completely different person – someone that can and is willing to do a lot more than before.
I used to be so reserved. I barely talk to anyone, unless I have no other alternative. This job – in a massive office with five floors just feels like a breath of fresh air for me. It’s time to grow up. It actually is. I’ve got to talk to more people, because it’s actually my job to pull lots of different departments together.
I know that this is far from my end goal, but this is a great place to be for right now. It’s going to do wonders for my confidence, and I think that that’s the most important thing for me. This whole experience has shown me that I’m capable of so much more than I give myself credit for.
So far attending these big meetings and drinks after work and introducing myself to new people is still a nerve-racking experience that doesn’t really come too naturally for me, but if it means that I’ve got steady income from a role that I quite like, I can make this work. I haven’t got a choice now, because I’m well and truly in.
